POINT systems supports CWACh conference

October saw POINT systems reach out to more schools in Cheshire. We supported the Autumn Cheshire West and Chester head teacher conference and we’ve had a great response from head teachers who attended.

Our stand was informative and visual with examples of several products which are popular with schools at the present.

We demonstrated the iboardtouch panel – a fantastic resource for classrooms today. Many head teachers approached us to specifically look at the panel and were impressed with the potential it could give a teacher.

We also had examples of several types of cases for ipads and chromebooks, including MAX cases – a robust high quality case for ipads.

Another product on display was the Lapsafe trolley – a robust, secure top of the range solution for ipads and laptops. This trolley is secure, beautifully designed and is able to charge and synchronise all equipment stored within.

POINT systems is proud to provide independent reliable advice to schools and businesses in Cheshire and the North West.

Why to choose VoIP for businesses

Voip

VoIP (or Voice over Internet Protocol) is simply just the method of transmitting voice communications (telephone calls) over an IP network such as an office Local Area Network (LAN) or the Internet. It is also the latest evolution of communications technology that includes ISDN and, as you’d expect, there’s a lot of debate as to which is better.

The following guide details why VoIP is fast becoming the communications technology of choice for today’s businesses:

Reduce Costs

VoIP provides many benefits over legacy telecoms technologies but by far the most documented will be in terms of costs. Substantial savings should be realised in terms of the rental costs and ongoing call charges but you will also find that VoIP deployments are easier to manage so there would be additional cost savings in terms of engineering and support charges.

Enhanced Functionality

The ability to have remote extensions such as home-workers, retain you landline number and deliver faxes to your inbox are just some of the additional features VoIP can introduce to a business over the legacy telecommunications options.

Flexibility

In the old days of digital telephony you would have to have paid for an engineer to come and move an extension, thus making reorganising an office an expensive and complex project. With VoIP, you simply unplug the phone at the old desk and then plug it in at the new desk and the ‘system’ will take care of the configuration.

Resilience

Disaster recovery comes as standard with VoIP. Unlike ISDN, in the event of a disaster such as a fire or flood, you would be able to log onto a portal and re-route where your inbound call traffic would go so that you can continue to operate. With ISDN this would be a time-consuming and costly exercise.

Future proofed

Sweden has already stopped delivering legacy ISDN services and it’s widely expected that the UK will follow suit in a few short years. By deploying VoIP today you are future-proofing your telecommunications and enjoying the additional benefits VoIP brings.

Easy to migrate

Making the switch to VoIP is incredibly simple. Firstly, everything happens remotely so you don’t have to do anything. Then, you can migrate in phases with no disruption to your existing services. And whilst VoIP is secure, reliable and resilient you can also retain some of your legacy services as a back-up for complete peace of mind.

You’re already using it…

Interestingly, you’re already using VoIP, even if you’re using ISDN. BT’s 21st  Century Network (21CN) project migrated their core network from legacy PSTN technologies to the latest carrier grade VoIP which means that once your call reaches the BT exchange it will be carried over their new VoIP network.

Security

As VoIP is much more flexible than traditional technology it’s easier to build in security features that would be too costly or just impossible with legacy solutions which means that for sensitive information such as financial details remain safe and secure and cannot be eavesdropped.

There are many more reasons to consider migrating to VoIP based on your own requirements and current infrastructure. To find out how VoIP can improve you your business please contact POINT Systems.

Keep your business safe with Signify

In the modern networked world, authentication and identity are at the centre of your network security. No matter how much money you spend on firewalls, VPNs, anti-virus, intrusion detection systems and other security systems, anyone who acquires the authentication credentials or identity of just one of your users can walk past all of these defences and gain access to your sensitive systems and data.

Single factor authentication – usually passwords – simply aren’t secure enough to do this. Passwords are too easily compromised – they can be easily snooped, phished, cracked, shared or guessed.

Signify is a company which helps organisations to secure their computer networks. They provide a secure alternative to passwords that safely enables remote access to systems and information by delivering two-factor authentication as an on-demand hosted service. Since 2000, Signify has built an outstanding reputation for delivering secure, reliable and flexible two-factor authentication which is quick and easy to deploy.

POINT Systems believes that Two factor authentication (2FA) is one solution for verifying the identity of your users securely and reliably every time.

But is this the right solution for you?

Do you need two-factor authentication?

The service is ideal for organisations that have:

Home workers and day extenders

Mobile staff

• Business partners who collaborate via an extranet or VPN

Guest and temporary workers

24 x 7 IT support staff

The key benefits to this 2 Factor Authentication are;

  • Guaranteed Reliability
  • Proven Security
  • Flexible to your requirements
  • Quick and easy

High level performance with Riverbed products

Is your organisation performing at its best?

Point Systems prides itself on using the latest technology and software to help companies work faster and more efficiently.  We have regularly used ‘Riverbed’ to give our customers the best performance for their organisations.

Riverbed delivers performance for the globally connected enterprise. With Riverbed, enterprises can successfully and intelligently implement strategic initiatives such as virtualization, consolidation, cloud computing, and disaster recovery without fear of compromising performance. By giving enterprises the platform they need to understand, optimize and consolidate their IT, Riverbed helps enterprises to build a fast, fluid and dynamic IT architecture that aligns with the business needs of the organization.

To reach the highest levels of performance for your company, Point Systems would recommend the Riverbed performance platform.

The performance platform is a set of modular products designed to empower IT organizations to align with and deliver results to the business. Each stand-alone product within the performance platform provides high performance gains and quick payback. Tied together, they can offer simplified deployment options and extended capabilities, ultimately delivering value greater than each stand-alone product. For example, they can provide visibility into optimized WAN environments and load-balanced applications, or streamline branch office infrastructure to improve end-user experience.

The Riverbed Performance Platform has five stand alone products which deliver high performance gains and quick payback. Tied together they can deliver cross-product capabilities to meet your unique needs.

Point Systems recently provided FUJI FILM IC with a Riverbed performance platform product (Steelhead). After the smooth installation, the international organisation saw huge improvements…

‘Tests carried out before and after the Steelhead implementation showed performance improvements by a factor of 3 in the speed of many operations and considerably more for some.

Point Systems also supported the implementation of Video Conferencing at three sites and everyone involved was very pleased with the outcome.

‘We would have no hesitation in recommending both Riverbed and POINT systems.’

Sandra Carrigan, IT Manager, FUJI FILM IC

ASTRA reduces satellite bandwidth costs

As with all IT technology satellite broadband solutions continue to improve.

Recently we’ve seen some new KA Band services being deployed – while there have been some “teething problems” they do offer more bandwidth at a reduced cost.

To compete with these new services, suppliers of KU band technology are offering new service packages and lower costs.

Depending on the customer application, these services can be more cost effective than the newer KA Band services.

For example, ASTRA are providing faster download speeds now – and their prices have been reduced!

POINT systems can help with advice on the most appropriate solution. Why not give us a call?

Check out the benefits of using Pre Terminated Fibre

There are 6 main factors driving installers and end users to use a pre-terminated solution as opposed to terminating on-site: –

  1. 1.     It’s the best way to terminate a fibre
    1. a.     the method of terminating (adding connectors directly to the core fibre) mains that quality of the terminations is high and consistent and thus giving guaranteed performance.

  1. 2.     It’s the cheapest way to terminate a fibre
    1. a.     the cost of terminating in a factory is less than on-site. This is due to speed at which multiple terminations can be done and also because the termination technique (hot cure oven) is the cheapest form of termination. This cost comparison doesn’t include other costs incurred by an installer of fibre such as capital expenditure on equipment and training of staff.

  1. 3.     It’s the only way to produce high volumes in short timescale
    1. a.     high volumes can be terminated on-site but space and set up times often restrict operations. Not to mention the cost of labour on-site to complete large projects escalates when overnight accommodation and travel costs start to be included.

  1. 4.     Access to site
    1. a.     time on-site is dramatically reduced. Although using pre-terminated fibre is not a “plug and play” solution when using traditional fibre links, the work on site is simplified to pulling, cleaning, inspecting and testing.

  1. 5.     Lead times
    1. a.     with products being delivered in 3 – 5 days it is quicker to order a completed fibre link than order the component parts from a distributor and then wait on-site for the delivery and then terminate

  1. 6.     Access to the skills and equipment
    1. a.     with the downsizing of many installation companies and the competition for new work, often installers do not have the in-house capacity to complete a project once it has been won.

Latest Satellite Broadband technology proving succesful!!!

Over the past few months we have been working closely with a number of suppliers on the deployment of the latest KA SAT band satellite systems.

This new technology offers greater bandwidths at competitive pricing.

For example, a 10Mb/4Mb link can be deployed for something like £150 per month

Tests have shown actual throughput at 7Mb/3Mb

There are several applications for this technology:

Where ADSL is not available or gives poor performance

When Telecomms providers can not deploy circuits quickly enough

For critical business links that need resilience

We are hoping that Mobile Solutions will become available soon – watch this space!!

Webroot has gone from being a midlevel competitor to possibly one of the best suites out there. The impact on your computer memory is remarkably low, you could easily beat the installation process in a staring contest it’s so fast, and the features are solid and work well even for a high-end premium security suite. The integrated mobile support bodes well for the future, too.

New broadband rapid deployment customers

We have recently won two new contracts with construction companies to supply and install satellite broadband kit for rapid deployment at new construction sites.

We can do this at any mainland location in the UK, and it can typically be installed within 2 or 3 days. We can also provide a site survey and decommissioning service.

Two options are available:

  • Customer owned equipment – We will manage storage / delivery etc
  • POINT Systems owned equipment – Customer pays rental for period of hire

We have recently provided satellite broadband to two major construction companies:

COSTAIN Limited

CROUDACE HOMES Limited

In both cases they had been waiting for a long time for installation of fixed links. They chose POINT systems to deliver a satellite broadband solution

Pickled Egg

Pickled Egg appointed Point Systems to provide a satellite broadband link for The ASUS Technology Zone. The Mobile Satellite sits on top of a 1959 Vintage Caravan, which has been completely re-furbished to provide our client with a mobile computing zone that will tour UK events, festivals over the next 18 months. Working with this retro style Pickled Egg have completely stripped and replaced the interior to provide 7 workstations and comfy seating areas at either end, with further outdoor space for 4-8 Netbooks.

We have just finished our first event in Cowes on the Isle of Wight, and have been extremely impressed with an uninterrupted connection. We would have no hesitation in recommending POINT Systems.

New Career Skills

New Career Skills is a private company providing training for people looking to start a new career. Since the company makes extensive use of IT there is a need to protect the IT network from malware and viruses.

After some analysis and testing Webroot Spy Sweeper was selected as the best solution. We know that this is one of the best products on the market. We were pleased with the ease of installation and manageability.

The product works well and appears to have very little affect on the performance of the PCs.

POINT systems supplied the product for us and they responded well to any questions raised and have been efficient in all areas. I would have no hesitation in recommending their services.

POINT systems attends CILIP Mobilemeet

POINT systems attended the recent CILIP Mobilemeet held in Dewsbury in May 2010. This meeting was an opportunity for people involved in mobile libraries from around the country to meet and discuss latest issues. Many attendees came on board the POINT systems demonstration vehicle to see our satellite broadband system in action and have a chat about different IT solutions that can be implemented on mobile libraries.

We look forward to attending the CILIP Mobilemeet next year in Matlock. In the meantime, CILIP members can see our advert in the upcoming August edition of Service Point magazine, or attached here to download.

In the past few months, POINT systems have supplied the new Crystop satellite broadband system to Aberdeenshire County Council and Stockton-on-Tees Council for use on board their mobile libraries. If you are interested in finding out more about mobile satellite broadband please contact us.

Merthyr Tydfil – static satellite

The Dolygaer Outdoor Education Centre provides a base for School groups, youth groups and those involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme for expeditions and training. The Centre had no means of accessing the internet until they were made aware of the Satellite Broadband option.

A static system was fitted and now provides high speed internet access for both staff and visitors. The system was installed efficiently and has proved to be very reliable. The users are very happy with the service they are receiving

Age Concern Stockport – server/VMWare/citrix

Age Concern Stockport provides a wide range of services and activities in order to deliver on their mission. In line with the organisations constitution all these services are designed to benefit people over the age of fifty living in Stockport. They rely on their IT infrastructure to provide this service and recently undertook a complete infrastructure upgrade.

POINT systems carried out the project which included the supply of a new server (DELL), the installation of VMWare, a refresh of user devices (desktop PCs, lap tops and printers), Citrix implementation for remote users and a wireless infrastructure. We also provide on going IT support and on line back up.

Costain – Bell Common – wireless/IPPBX

Costain are carrying out the refurbishment of the Bell Common tunnel on the M25. This required a number of engineers to work from portakabins on the edge of the motorway. However telecommunications lines could only be installed at the “roof” of the tunnel.

POINT systems deployed a wireless link from the roof of the tunnel down to the 4 portakabins. We also deployed an IP PBX and wireless handsets. This allowed the portakabins to be moved without disruption to the service.
